FITZROY by Lauren OāDonnell & Adam Dwyer
FITZROY
Suburb SeriesĀ -Ā PIECEĀ 02Ā - 'Limited Edition'Ā Collection.
In a rendition calledĀ Suburb Series, architects Lauren OāDonnell & Adam Dwyer from ODD Studio, draw Melbourne suburbs, viewed from above.
Each drawing is a static image, deep in information about, planning, history, geography, construction, solar and time. Pieced together from a blend of archived maps and aerial photographs, the drawings embed a personal emotion, felt with the rich belonging to a connection of place.
FitzroyĀ was planned as Melbourneās first suburb, laid out in a grid plan and is characterised by a rectangular grid of medium-sized streets and narrow back lanes. Its built form is a legacy of its early history from a mixture of land uses, producing a diverse range of typologies and scales. The rendition illustrates the parameters of Nicholson St to Napier St, highlighting the infamous Rose St Artistās Market, Brunswick St, Fitzroy Swimming Pool and also the SOUTHWOOD store.
Drawn on the date of the autumnal equinox, the piece captures the sun directly over the equator, marking the beginning of the fall when the sun is at its lowest point and the time when the spectacle of shadow is most present across the city. The render reveals this active relationship of āShadowā and āLightā in Melbourne's public spaces, arterial streets, and residences.
As the cityās urban settlement is evolving, FitzroyĀ provides a memory of which shadows are cast from the year 2021.
